KIRK "Its long overdue but I hope to take a teammate to your New York Open tournament and I wouldn't feel right showing up without this. Not sure if you even remember, but this is something I have to do. It is Mike Brenkert and I competed in the Langhorne and Ocean City tournaments. At the Ocean City one I lost my first match and pretended to be hurt as my opponent got his hand raised. Teen Expert Absolute Gi. First of all I would like to say that I am very sorry for my actions at the Ocean City tournament. I was riding high off of 5 tournament wins since January and I was feeling way to overconfident. I was partying 2-3 times a week, eating unclean and training maybe 2 times a week. I was so full of myself that when I lost my first match in the gi division I couldn't bear it and pretended to have been hurt so it wouldn't seem like I legitimately lost, but I did. The car ride home I was in some sort of shock...I couldn't believe what I had just done. I don't think have ever been more disgusted in myself than that day. It still gives me a bad feeling inside when I think about it, which is why It took me so long to write this.
Since that tournament I took 3 months off of training completely to re-evaluate everything. Even thinking about training would only bring me memories of the way I handled myself at that match and I could not stand it. That day I misrepresented my school and myself as a punk, and I hope I never do that again. I finally returned to training with a different mindset, I became extremely humble agian and stopped thinking of myself as some bad ass. I eventually returned to competition in September and October and then finally, last weekend I achieved my dream since beginning this sport and won a NAGA championship belt. I don't think this would have been possible without being humbled in Ocean City." The medals for the tournament were of very nice quality, especially for an ongoing regular event. The idea of having the tournament name, the location, and the date all prominently displayed on the medal is something rarely scene. This distinguishes the medal from other trophies, especially after a while afterwards when it is often difficult to determine what an award is from and it then loses its value!"
"The madison system of matching looks to work very well. Serious thought looks to be put into the setting up of the pools to give everyone as fair a chance as possible. It seems ridiculous to think that you can always set up well balanced groups of competitors, when other much larger tournaments often leave you waiting for hours only to find out your kids have nobody to just one person to fight. I have been involved with helping to run large judo tournaments for 20 years so I understand the work that it takes. Keep up the hard work to put grappling arts at the top where they belong."
