Here's What Competitor's Have To Say:

Even though it was a long day I still got 4 matches in and feel like I took some important lessons for it.  If I can offer anything I would say don't let it get you down and keep getting better each time.  If it helps at all I am considering doing the Thankgiving Tourny if it fits my schedule.  I hope all is well.

Besides waiting FOREVER, I was expecting it from past events, thank you for an apology. I did enjoy being on the battleship (probably because I won a medal), I would compete again if you hosted another event.

I do want you to know that one thing was perfect...the weigh-ins. It was flawless. Do not change a thing with that. It took a matter of seconds to go through it. Nice job.

It was a good day overall. My son Ray Carlisi (carleesee) won a Gold each in Gi and No Gi in the Teen division. Can't wait to see the results and pics and video of Ray posted soon because I did not take any photos or video.

I would like to take the time to say that I really did enjoy myself at the battleship.  the competition and overall respect among the competitors was great and the atmosphere was great!  apology accepted and i look forward to future tournaments!  Thank you!

Jim, your event was a great one I wasn't able to compete in my no gi event because of time scheduling with my gi event. That was my only problem. I had a ton of fun and it was a great place to have a tournament. Thanks for taking your time and putting together a great event.

Although the waiting was ungodly, You all did a great job handling the amount of  people. We look forward to The Thanksgiving Throw down. Keep me posted.

Maybe it will not to others, but this e-mail means a lot.  I am an operations manager for an online company and prior to that I was a customer service manager for three years.  The fact that you took the time to compose this e-mail and take responsibility for the days short comings tells me a lot about yourself and your organization.  Although your staff was overwhelmed, they never stopped being courteous or pleasant when interacting with many disgruntle competitors and/or parents.  Overall they did do an excellent job for what they had to work with.  It is my understanding that this was your first event of this size and magnitude, of course there are going to be unforeseen issues.  Although a long day, the weather was beautiful and Noah and I had a good time ( I guess it helps that he went 5-0 with 5 tap outs and took home two gold medals). In closing I would like to leave you with words that I have hanging on the office wall for my staff.  "Don't judge a person by the mistakes that they make, judge them by how they learn and react to those mistakes."  Feel free to contact me with any future advertising for Good Fight events.

All the best,

Michael Caruso

Just wanted to respond that although some of the kid’s brackets were a little late, I thought it was a very good tournament regardless.  My son (and the others we talked to) really enjoyed the atmosphere of being on the ship, and how the mats were set up to see the water.  We plan on attending your next tournament, but I have a couple questions: We’ll see you at your next tournament in November, and hope you continue to have these tournaments.  I really like the fact you have them so frequently, as we don’t have to wait every 3-4 months for NAGA or GQ.

I was not able to attend your Tournament ... But it sounds like it was a GREAT DAY!!! and you have alot of wonderful friends who kicked in to help!!! CONGRATS!!!! to you and your staff!!!! and I love the letter you sent acknowledging the day....very classy!

Please send CARLOS TERRINHA (my Instructor and President of the Mass Federation) an invitation to your next tournament to share with our team...

Dear Jim,

Thanks for the email. I just wanted to let you know that even though the wait was long and there were problems with the bracketing we still had a wonderful time. It was a beautiful day and as with any competition that my son and I attended, we view it all as a learning experience. We were able to gain valuable knowledge by watching some of the many “Good Fights” and I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of a competition that was the first of its kind. I give you a huge pat on the back for putting up with some rude parents that obviously think that they could have done a better job. I also want to compliment you on the rules that you had in place. I think that the elimination of ankle locks and such allow young fighters to be protected against unnecessary injuries. All in all a good day and I hope to see you again next year.

Jim,

Thanks for the email, I really appreciate the attempt to make things right...it says a lot about you and your organization.  As I said at the tournament, it was great to see such a huge turn out...unfortunately it just happened to be too big to handle the way you had originally expected...at least now you know you'll get great turn outs moving forward, which is a good thing.  I'd still ask that my money be refunded only because I travel a lot for work and I'm not certain I'll be around in order to take advantage of the credit you offered me for the next tournament.  I would however still like to be included on any upcoming events you have.  I'd be more than willing to give your team my business again knowing that things will be run more smoothly moving forward.  Thanks again for reaching out to me, it makes a big difference and is a genuine sign of professionalism.  If you would refund the money to the card I used to pre-register I'd greatly appreciate it.

Chris Hughes

Glad it was a great success for you - all in all you did a great job for your first time!   Wish you much success in your future tournaments!!

My name is Benjamin Anastasio and I want you to know that even though the fights were set back a few hours I had an excellent time and so did all my friends that fought with me and also the ones who just came to watch.  I also want you to know that I think you all were very professional and handled the problems very well.  Thanks for a cool tournament on a BATTLESHIP!!!

Benjamin

Hey Jim thank you for the e-mail response and the phone call. I believe we all must start somewhere and as long as your intentions are good and you truly possess a love for the sport it will reflect in your events to come. I thank you for your time and would appreciate it if you would foward  my address to Bill. Thank you and hope to compete in 1of your events in the future.

Ship happens lol we had a blast been to tourneys that have been around for years and have same problems we will be back next time thank you!

What an amazing day and what an amazing undertaking.  I don't know how you kept your cool under all that pressure.  I love your attitude about this event.   You want to push forward and make the next one better.  Please sit back and look  on some the great things that happened yesterday also.

It was my pleasure to work for you.  Taylor and I are truly blessed to have you and your school  family in our lives.  God some how wanted it that way.

Just so you know I had a wonderful time at the good fight yesterday.  It was my first tournament ever and it was an awesome experience.  I took first in my division and it was one of the best feeling ever. I had a wonderful time and look forward to competing again there in the near future.  BTW the metals look awesome =)

Anthony Persichilli

Your staff was outstanding. Yours is neither the first or last grappling organization to start the show late, I guess it comes with the territory. Luckily the weather was friendly.....

For the next show, an aircraft carrier (if you have one handy) might fit a few more mats....

Hi Jim,

No need to ask for forgiveness. I may be one of a few who knows the spirit with which you approached this and lets be honest, no one can predict these things with pinpoint accuracy. The important thing is to learn and move forward. I did speak with Bill Scanlon...I explained to him I was not able to fight and had to leave due to the length of time it took to have everyone compete...He indicated I should let you know I spoke to him and to see what you could do with regards to my entrance fee. It is truly difficult to maintain the mental game when you have to wait as long as we did...and again, I don't blame you or the staff, things happen....with regards to the event itself, it was fine, but the number of contestants did prove to be a formidable variable to deal with. I will say this, it was the first tournament I've done led by prayer, and for this, I commend you. I am one who believes without Him, nothing is possible and appreciate you taking the time to give credit to He who deserves it. Anyway, I hope this email finds you well.

"Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever." Thank you Jim stay strong in your faith and always love the lord

I'm very happy that your tournament drew such a large crowd. It seems that each division had a substantial amount of competitors, except mine. As we discussed on the ship I pre~ registered online w a credit card and you said you would reimburse me for the fact that I was there all day and had no one to fight. I very much appreciate this gesture bc I know some people wouldn't do that. On a lighter note other guys from my school were able to compete and had a great time. I look forward to attending future tournaments w The Good Fight.

The event was not so bad concidering it was your first event. Looking foward to the next one. The officiating can be better, I think there were some bad calls and miss matches but for the most part it was good.

I am sure you will make great strides......my boys had a great time.....just a long day :)

Also, if you should need any help at the tournaments, please feel free to use my husband and I .....we are there the entire time anyway and usually have planty of time to either help at registrations, tables or elsewhere.....

April Wilson

I'm sure your very tired from a long day yesterday.  It was a beautiful day and fun time at the Battleship.  You had ask us to shoot you an email to remind you about Dan Beinlich  he was in the U-12 Gi Division, he didn't get a chance to fight again, he only fought 1 time, with a guarantee of two times fighting.  I was a bit upset with how that happened, but you did give him a free shirt and you said that the next tournament you have he will enter for free.  That sounds very good.  I know this was your first get together and you mentioned that you didn't think you would have as many people as you thought.  I only found out about it 2 weeks ago, as did a lot of other parents....that's ok, it was definitely worth every penny, we took the tour of the battleship and just walked around and watched my son and my son's school compete and it was a great sunny day!  I bet it was really hard to get something like that in the works and I think you did a GREAT job, a few kinks here and there but you have to expect that with such a large crowd, at least you know what to expect the next time around.

Thank you so much for a beautiful day!

Jim,

Thank you for the prompt response I appreciate it.  Thank you for updating me with this information, I did not know the difference between rated and ranked.  For the Thanksgiving Day Throw Down I plan on attending and I will preregister, if I can help out I would love to do that.  I will try to get some of the guys at my school to come out to that tournament as well.

Overall - I had a lot of fun, I had to wait a while but once it was time for me to go it was great.  And a reminder, all tournaments face problems.  Naga and Grapplers Quest take FOREVER, my old high school wrestling tournaments, took forever.  For your first time out of the gate it was successful.  My suggestions are just suggestions please do not think I am being a jerk or know it all, I just want you guys to have a another successful tournament so I can be part of it grappling and I am sure positive feedback is helpful.

By the way, all the staff at the tournament and the refs were really nice people and very helpful and accommodating.  And the USSNJ battleship site was really cool, plus the event was outdoors which is a crazy change of pace.

Andrew Michael Vuocolo

No need for apologies it was an honor to compete in the tournament and besides the fact of waiting 12 hours to fight I enjoyed it. lol. I placed third in both my no gi and gi fights. This was my first tournament and I had the best time of my life. Thank you for the experience and I look forward to participating in other tournaments! I understand how hard it was for the staff there and give my deepest respects to them and all others who helped out.

I just wanted to let you know that I was more than satisfied wit how things were ran, especially since this was the first tournament on a battleship.  The only problem was one of my team mates not getting to do no-gi. That was because we had to be back in Albany, NY by a certain time. Other than that I would like to say job well done and I look forward to competing in many more goodfight tournaments.
